After having a good few seasons at Marítimo and Rio Ave, Pedro Martins arrived this summer at ‘Cidade Berço’ (Guimarães), where he will take over the Vitória SC job. The expectations are high for the next season, since the new coach arrives successful in his former teams and saw his new squad having a good transfer market, possessing now an above average quality from what we usually can see in Liga NOS.

Rúben Ferreira, João Aurélio, Rafael Miranda, Marega, Soares, Paolo Hurtado and the returning Bernard who the Vitória SC fans missed greatly have all arrived this summer to Guimarães. In the departures there are a few big losses like Cafú and Dalbert who left for France, Otávio who returned to Porto and Henrique Dourado that returned to Brazil to play for Fluminense.

The beginning of the league brought the exciting Minho Derby, against Sporting de Braga to debut Pedro Martins in the Vitória SC bench in Liga NOS. It was not the best start for the Vitória fans because Braga won 1-0, with a goal from Pedro Santos in the first half.

Pedro Martins side didn’t have a bad match, but they still have a few issues in several moments of the game.
They have presented themselves in a 1-4-4-2, with a well crowded front line. Some noted problems were: the space between sectors, the control of the amplitude with the block not moving correctly, the wingers roles in defensive actions, ball losing reaction, lack of connection between sectors during the offensive movements (mainly between midfielders and forwards) and lack of creativity in the game’s processes, with no one thinking a little outside the box and present different solutions.

The two central midfielders (Rafael Miranda and João Pedro), showed to be very capable, but with difficulties defensively, since the space they had to cover was too big and they couldn’t always do it effectively. The team had many times the 4 front players completely stuck in the opponents defensive line, which was the most used movement. To battle the lack of connection between sectors, Pedro Martins changed a lot of times Marega’s, Ricardo Valente’s and Hurtado’s positioning, with Hurtado behind Soares a better connection started to appear, since the peruvian dropped a bit more in the pitch to make support movements and wasn’t always stuck in the opponents defensive line.

The four defenders have already showed a good understanding on what they should do, but still need to improve the way they control deepness and understand the stimulations to move forward the defensive block. There is a good connection between the defenders and midfielders in the first construction phase, and even when the centre backs don’t place the ball in the supports, the passing lines are still there. The full backs try to help a lot in the offensive tasks, but they need to know the spaces they have to occupy, because a lot of times they are in the same line as the wingers, with no complementarity existing, or they were too far from the ball, just like the wingers, lacking a way for the ball to get there.

With the arrival of Bernard, the ‘vimaranense’ team will win two thing that greatly lacked in this game: creativity and a strong reaction when losing the ball. He will be a player trying to replace Otávio, but with a little bit different profile. Soares, the player who had the spotlight after missing a penalty, is an above average quality forward for our league, and will hopefully correspond to what the fans expect from him during this season. Also a note about João Pedro, who in this game demonstrated a lot of quality, with a very interesting central midfielder profile and if he continues this trend he will certainly be one of the League revelations. After a few seasons at the B team and lack of game time in the main squad it seems like the coach believes in him. And after what was seen at the Derby, he certainly has reasons to do so.

Let’s see how Pedro Martins staying in Guimarães progresses. The built squad is very interesting for our championship, now remaining to be seen what the portuguese coach will be capable to do with it and what dynamics he will create.

Offensive transition with the left winger conducting more in the interior with the full back guaranteeing the amplitude on the left side. All passageways occupied, but when a numerical inferiority exists, the forward seeks the deepness in the defenders back.

First construction phase where the midfielder was between the centre backs, but left afterwards and came giving a passing line in that position. Centre back with various passing options, but sends a long ball forward.

Braga using 3 players in the first construction phase with the centre backs wide open. In Vitória side, João Pedro moves forward and positions himself between the two forwards, keeping another 3 players line in the back balancing the team.

Centre back with the ball, players a bit far from the ball position and using the same spaces. Deepness attack, with the full back wide open and the left winger in the interior.

Attacking play from Braga. Vitória’s defense closes the central passageway, but then there is space between sectors, which allows Rafa to win the rebound and explore the amplitude. Braga’s goal came from this situation.

Creation phase. In this case, the winger comes inside, with the full back giving amplitude, which allowed the central midfielder having a great passing line to deliver the ball. The winger from the other side is also in the interior.

The circles marking the starting positions from João Aurélio, Marega and João Pedro. A triangle being formed, with Marega then delivering to João Pedro who sends the ball to João Aurélio’s run in deepness. Soares movement is also important, who drops in the field and brings Boly with him.

Marega moves to the interior with the ball. Hurtado moving outside his marked position very well putting himself in the space behind Braga’s midfielders back, but Marega does not pass the ball, where he could create a good situation.

Rafa receiving the ball from his back in the central passageway and the two central midfielders from Vitória (João Pedro and Rafael Miranda) immediately doing pressure. A space in the midfielders back is created since the defense does not move up the field (due to the stimulation from the player receiving on his back and with pressure) and neither the wingers closing the interior.

Long ball from Braga’s player into deepness. Vitória’s defense is not aligned and the left centre back (Pedro Henrique) not supporting well to control deepness.

Pedro Henrique moved up with the ball and delivered to Hurtado who came into the interior leaving the amplitude to Rúben Ferreira. Four players almost in the limit of deepness leaning to Braga’s defensive line, which makes the connection between sectors more difficult. Marega attacking deepness.

Ball in the left wing and Ricardo Valente performing a cross, with Vitória managing to get a numerical superiority when attacking the ball in the area.

Ball on right Braga’s right wing and Vitórias’s midfielders and forwards lines a bit distant. Marega wide open not closing inside. Player on his back and the defensive line also not shortening space which forces the midfielders to move forward.

By this time, Hurtado had already moved to the centre, playing behind Soares and trying to improve the connection between sectors.

The ball came from the right to the left. The midfielder positions himself between the centre backs, but the rest of the team takes too much time approximating, being too far and leaving whoever is with ball without great options, despite the numerical superiority there.

Soares with the ball who is going to combine directly with João Pedro, who after that doesnt not return the ball, since Braga’s defense moves up, shortening space and winning possession. Three players attacking deepness when Soares has the ball.

Vitória in defensive organization, positioning in 1-4-4-2, with a medium block, closing the central passageway, with the pressure from the forwards not being well done, and the lines being a bit distant, which leaves space between sectors. Marega always more wide open and a bit ahead to prepare the offensive transition if they recover the ball.

Problems in Vitória’s defensive transition when the two central midfielders come close to the wings and leaving space in the middle.

Left full back with the ball and with various passing lines. Hurtado drops down to receive and Marega moves to the interior. There is no amplitude guaranteed by anyone in the right wing.

The problem from the central passageway being free when the midfielders get close to the line. Pressure not being well applied, despite the numerical superiority, and the open passing line into the central passageway.

Braga closing the central passageway. Vitória’s wingers well inside, close to Soares. Left full back moves up and João Pedro sends the ball there.

Right full back with the ball. Marega in the limit of deepness dragging the oponent full back. Hurtado comes from the interior to the exterior, being able to receibe the pass or drag his marker.

Offensive transition and Soares droping to offer frontal support and then delivering to the supports. Marega also leaving very quickly.

Hurtado with an individual initiative moving the ball to the interior, not having any offensive coverage in case he loses the ball (which happened) or giving a safer passing line.

First construction phase. Josué with the ball seeking deepness. Hurtado moves to the central passageway also offering a passing line to the centre back.

In the last minutes, many players in attack, with the wingers seeking more the interior leaving the amplitude to the full backs who are projecting very much.
